About Sophie
Senate District 30 is Sophie’s hometown, having lived here in Scarborough her entire life! She attended Lil’ Folks Farm on Black Point Road, and in high school served as Class President and gained lifelong experience in leadership, dialogue and facilitation by becoming part of the international Seed of Peace peace-building organization.
In 2019, Sophie graduated from Brandeis University with a Bachelor’s degree in International & Global Studies, with a certificate in International Criminal Law from Leiden University at The Hague, Netherlands. During her time as an undergraduate, she became a fierce advocate for equity and inclusion.
She studied international law at Leiden University Law School in The Hague, Netherlands, during a scholarship-sponsored semester abroad, worked at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, served as a residential advisor to underclassmen at Brandeis, was a research assistant and teaching assistant, and spent a summer in Jerusalem and Ramallah, where she facilitated dialogue for the Palestinian and Israeli Youth Chorus.
Sophie is the recipient of the Robert B. Sherman ’67 Memorial Prize, which is awarded to a Brandeis student who has demonstrated “a strong commitment to enhancing social diversity and cooperation, to promoting social welfare through political thought and activism, and to helping people achieve their rights.”
After graduating from Brandeis in 2019, Sophie moved to Washington, D.C., where she was a legislative intern in the office of Senator Angus King (I-ME). In Senator King’s office, she saw firsthand the power of cross-aisle collaboration for successful policymaking while working on issues involving the judiciary, immigration, civil rights, and veterans affairs.
Sophie joined the U.S. presidential campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) in January 2020, grassroots campaigning on his behalf in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and California.
In 2020, as COVID-19 hit, Sophie returned to her hometown of Scarborough and decided to run for public office to serve Scarborough in the Maine House. As Scarborough State Representative, she has established a record of substantive, diverse, impactful passage of legislation to meet the needs of our community from climate change, to economic justice, to civil rights, to build a stronger and more sustainable Maine future.
Currently in her third term, Sophie offers experienced leadership, thoughtful collaboration, and a strong voice at the table, focused on representing the people of Scarborough & Gorham through the development of sustainable and inclusive policy in Augusta.
From tackling the affordability crisis and confronting climate change, to strengthening health care for all Maine people and protecting the rule of law so every member of our community is safe, Sophie will always put our community first.
